How many kinds of material are used for filling?
|
These days , the filling materials that are used: 1. Silver amalgam filling containing a mixture of mercury, and an alloy of silver, tin and copper, without hazard for humans in their solid state. This material is able to be placed in the tooth cavity quickly and cost effective 2. Composite resin, a tooth-coloured plastic mixture filled with glass. The material is used for anterior teeth, in cervical abrasion teeth for reduction of the sensitivity, in posterior teeth and where needed for aesthetics. 3. Ceramic inlay used in cases where a large amount of tooth structure is missing or for veneer facing on anterior teeth. 4. Gold inlay used in the posterior teeth for large cavities. Choice of materials have to be evaluated for each patients particular needs. The occlusion and personal habits should also be taken into consideration.

| Why does sensitivity occur after treatment? |
The sensitivity of the tooth is caused from the dentinal tubule contents being stimulated inducing an increase in the pulpal blood flow affecting the nerve. During the treatment, drilling , watering , drying and the shrinkage of some materials takes place affecting the dentinal tubule fluid. Recommendation to reduce sensitivity is the use of an anesthetic solution containing vasocanstrictor. This should be used routinely for patient comfort and reducing post-operative sensitivity. Occasionally the patient may be sensitive for 1 - 2 weeks after the treatment.

| The lower anterior baby tooth has moved and the permanent tooth is not aligned. What should we do? |
While it is a fairly common occurrence for the lower anterior permanent teeth to erupt slightly behind the primary teeth (baby teeth), if eruption of the permanent teeth is too far behind, this may be an indication the primary roots are not properly resorbing. A radiograph taken of the area will help determine the relative positions of the permanent and primary teeth. Then dentists will be able to better diagnose if the primary teeth may eventually be lost on their own or they will need to be removed.
